Holy Week
This Holy Week invites and challenges us to spiritually enter into the heart of the Third Week or phase of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius of Loyola. It is an opportunity for all of us to enter into the passion, suffering and death of Christ—WITH Christ. Ignatius encourages us to use silence to activate our senses, our memory, our emotions and our feelings in order to connect WITH Christ as he makes this somber, dramatic and painful journey. We will read two versions of the Passion this week. One is according to Mark this weekend, and the other is according to John on Good Friday.
By entering into this spiritual exercise, Ignatius encourages us to intentionally connect with the feelings and emotions of Jesus. This can be done by letting certain words, phrases or images from the story catch our attention and move our hearts. Notice words or phrases from the drama that articulate your experiences and identify the commonalities of your life and the Lord’s life.
Gala Thanks
Our 2024 A Night for Champions Gala was one of the most successful yet. I want to thank all of you who supported the event by attending, bidding on line, pooling resources to bid on items with others, volunteering or encouraged others to participate. Next to gathering for the Eucharist, our annual Gala celebrates the best of who we are as an ENTIRE community. The Eucharist simultaneously marks us as the Body of Christ and gives us the gift of the Body of Christ. Our Gala seals our ENTIRE community as The Body of Christ with fun and generosity.
Each year dedicated parishioners and Academy parents step up to lead this very significant all community event. My most heartfelt thanks to this year’s Chair couple, Jean and Scott Swenson. The Swensons and their three children have been active parishioners for thirty years. They crafted a unique theme this year to acknowledge and celebrate champions who carry out our mission in the Academy and the Parish every single day.
Each year generous sponsors make significant commitments to the success of this event. Please Join me in thanking this year’s sponsors:
Nobel Prize-Mike & Melissa Canning
Stanley Cup-Anonymous
Pulitzer Prize-Care Roofing – Michael Zuccaro, Smith Corcoran Funeral Home
Triple Crown-Peter and Paula Fasseas (Paws Chicago), The Struckmeyer Family
Archideck, David & Kristen Berryhill
Green Jacket-Ahlgrim and Sons Funeral Home and Cremation Services
Linda Longmeyer-Berkshire Hathaway Stark Real Estate, Beth and Mike McMahon
Donna and Time Madel, Mechanical 24 Inc., Shawn and Amanda Louw
Special thanks to Linda Longmeyer who organizes the sponsorship portion of the event.
My friend from grade school, Bernie Schaeffer has provided creative, organizational and inspirational elements for each Gala for the past ten years. Bernie is the staff person who works alongside the chairs and provides the engine that runs this event that gives such significant financial support to both Academy and Parish. Thanks to Kate O’Brien, our principal, and her staff, to Michael Patti who adds such creative digital marketing and video elements that helps tell a unique story each year. Joanne Castle brought the theme to life with decorations and visuals. Eric Kramp, our Parish Manager provided additional organizational help this year.
I want to thank the staff at Concorde Banquets in Kildeer who have hosted severl of our galas, and David Goodman, our auctioneer. Once again, a legion of volunteers from both Academy and Parish work so hard on so many details.
Congratulations Henry Smogolski, the 2024 Barb and Kurt Knuth Distinguished Service Award winner.
