Awaken
November 21-23, 2008 OR April 3-5, 2009
Awaken is a powerful overnight retreat for teens in high school. Awaken aims to have the teens walk in the shoes of the homeless and hungry. The teens will be a little bit tired, a little bit hungry and a little bit cold as they investigate social issues that face impoverished individuals and families.
Awaken includes social justice ministry, a hunger meal and an African-American gospel mass. It requires some physical activity and plenty of walking. Teens stay overnight at Brother David Darst Center for Justice and Peace, Spirituality and Education (312-225-3099) with adult chaperones. The retreat center is at 2834 S. Normal Avenue, Chicago IL 60616. We will travel by foot, Metra, El train and CTA bus in order to get to the retreat center and back to Holy Family.
At this time, the cost of accommodation and food is covered by Holy Family. Teens will need money for public transport and lunch on Sunday, approximately $25.00. There are a limited number of spaces.
Kairos
November 7-10, 2008 OR February 13-16, 2009
Kairos, which means the “Lord’s time,” is a Christian experience of prayer and reflection, run by a team of adult and teen leaders. Kairos retreats are well known through the Chicagoland area. This particular Kairos is unique because of its’ diversity. The youth who participate in and lead this particular Kairos come from both public and Catholic high schools. This retreat is led by trained peer leaders. With appropriate adult leadership from priests and male and female lay ministers, we feel this Kairos is the best possible environment for a Catholic retreat. And even though a participant need not be Catholic to be on the retreat, this diversity creates a safe environment to understand the richness of our Catholic Community.
The retreat is for teens in their Junior or Senior year of high school. They do NOT have to be confirmed. The cost of the retreat is $350.00. We realize that this is expensive. Please do not let the cost be a prohibitive factor in you not attending. Please call Paul McMahon at (847) 907-3412 if you need financial assistance. The cost includes 3 nights accommodation, all meals, transport and materials. We can help if you need it! Please ask.
