Spirit Camp Outreach Information

In 2008, Fr. Brian Kerr of the Missionaries of the Poor founded the Divine Mercy School Program to assist poor children suffering from the famine devastating East Africa. The first missionary aim was simple: to provide basic meals to the poorest, neediest children who had nothing to eat. Next, a school was started in the community to provide the children a future through education and evangelization.

The school was named: Divine Mercy School. It is located in Ruia Chokaa, the fastest growing slum community in East Nairobi, Kenya. The school educates and serves 120 children in 4 classes ranging from ages 3 to 7. These children come from the poorest families and many of them have lost their father or sometimes both parents. Most parents are unable to provide their children with even one basic meal per day or to pay to send them to school. Divine Mercy school is a ray of great hope for God’s little children, who otherwise would have no access to proper food, education or health assistance.

In November 2017, the Divine Mercy School building was destroyed by heavy rains. Through the generosity of many friends in the Chicagoland area, a new, updated school was built and opened in March 2018. The main focus was the classrooms, but there is still more work to be done.

Our outreach this year will go toward furnishing a kitchen for Divine Mercy School. The old kitchen was outdated and not safe for the children. While the kitchen is under construction, the school needs our help to donate place settings, industrial-sized rice cookers, and dining benches. All funds raised will go directly to funding this goal.
